Ryder Practice Guidelines for Vitamin C in Trauma

Purpose

  • Use of Vitamin C bolus and infusion to augment healing and reduce negative sequela of stress of trauma.

Procedure

  • IV vitamin C 1.5 gram every 6 hours x 96 hours

Indications

  • Trauma Laparotomy admitted to Trauma ICU

Exclusion

  • Acute Kidney Injury
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Nephrectomy

Monitoring

  • Point of care blood glucose should not be impacted by this dose of vitamin C
  • Daily BMP should be done on all patients receiving Vitamin C
  • Monitor Intake and Output with appreciation that Vitamin C may have diuretic effect
