Evelin Matamoros

In January 2013, Evelin Matamoros was walking out of a restaurant in Miami when she was approached by an armed robber who demanded her purse. Evelin complied with the robber’s demands – still, he shot her in the face.

The bullet entered through her cheekbone, traveled through her mouth and into the upper part of her neck. Evelin was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center, where doctors removed the bullet lodged in her neck.

“I feel so blessed because I have a second chance at life,” said Matamoros. “I kept thinking don’t close your eyes. I have to live for my two daughters, for my family.”

“I thank God every day because he put a lot of angels in my path at that moment. I am eternally grateful to the doctors and nurses who took care of me.”

Evelin underwent three other surgeries to reconstruct her jaw.

Evelin has since fully recovered. She enjoys spending her free time with her husband and daughters, who are now 12 and 14 years old.
