Jody Wright
In September 2007, Miami-Dade Police Officer Jody Wright and three other officers pulled over a vehicle that was driving erratically in Southwest Miami-Dade. The driver opened fire on the officers, killing one of them during the ambush. Officer Wright was shot in the right leg, and the two other officers were slightly hurt.
Wright was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center, where doctors worked very hard to save her leg. Officer Wright spent six weeks recovering at Ryder Trauma Center. It has been long road to recovery.
Since the shooting, she has undergone 26 surgeries, and continues to do physical therapy to be able to walk properly and gain strength in her leg.
“The memories I have of the doctors and nurses of Ryder Trauma are one of great appreciation and admiration. Thank you to Dr. Gregory Zych and staff for initially doing my very first surgery and saving my leg. Since then I have had the honor and privilege dealing with Dr. James Hutson. He has, in short, preformed a miracle on my leg.”

Three years after her injuries, she managed to return to work at the Miami-Dade Police Department. She is currently working in The Special Patrol Bureau Aviation Unit.
Officer Wright, who enjoys riding her bicycle on her free time, is grateful to be alive despite all the challenges she has faced.
“Life is too short,” she said. “You can’t take things for granted.”
